What is that on the warp scale?

NASA launched yesterday the New Horizons spacecraft, the long-awaited express probe to Pluto that will finally photograph up-close the last planet in the solar system (sort of).

By the time it reaches Pluto the probe will be traveling at 36,000 miles / hour, making it the fastest spacecraft ever launched by humans. We’ve still got a way to go before getting to warp, though. Light speed is approximately 671 million miles / hour, so by my calculation that puts humanity’s best at about 0.05% warp - one twentieth of one percent.

Hey, 9 years is short. If they launched it 3 weeks later, it would take an extra 5 years. Try explaing that to your boss.
And at least the nuclear activists will stop protesting for a while.

I wondered if this one would bring you out of lurk mode, Rob. Isn't it more fun this way? :)

So, you arranged the whole launch, just to get me to say something on your blog. Devious.
Yes, it's very therapeutic. I can feel the ulcer shrinking.
And yes, Aimee, I am inferior because my name isn't blue and underlined. I'll get around to it.... eventually.

You didn't know I had $700 million and 24 pounds of plutonium laying around, did you.
