Sam Alito: Maybe a bigot, definitely a liar
Is Samuel Alito a bigot? That’s the question of the day after the bomb dropped by Senator Edward Kennedy just before lunch yesterday during confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court nominee. It seems Mr. Alito is or was at one time a member of “Concerned Alumni of Princeton”, an activist group opposed to enrollment of women and minorities in that university. Alito shuffled through a series of explanations, first saying he didn’t recall being a member of the group and later saying his membership was simply to support the return of ROTC to campus. His excuses might be believable, but for a 1985 application to a job in the Reagan Justice Department touting his membership in the group as a conservative credential.
Alito of course insists he is not a bigot and doesn’t subscribe to the beliefs of CAP, but then why flaunt the membership in a job application? I’m reminded of the last time I posted on this subject. Either Alito was lying then or he is lying now. Either way it’s unacceptable.

And yet, he'll get confirmed. The Republicans on the committee are practically fawning over him. They apologized for his having to endure this. Endure what? Tell whether he was lying then or now? I'm sorry, but if you have lied in the past, what assurances do we have that you aren't lying now?
I really do not understand why the Democrats don't just ask him directly: "Were you lying then or are you lying now?"
Apparently there is no mention of Alito in any CAP records, so assuming they weren’t simply destroyed the question becomes “Why did you lie on your resume?”
Seriously. How can you *not* ask that question. How do you *not* make the lying thing an issue? Demand an explanation! Attack! Attack!
