It’s 1990 all over again
Marion Barry was doing all right there for a while. Oh sure, since his political life was resurrected in 2004 he has displayed a serious misunderstanding of basic economic development and been investigated for tax fraud, but those are white-collar problems not altogether too uncommon for otherwise respectable politicians (an oxymoron, I know, but let’s move on). But all of a sudden the universe has righted itself and Barry has engulfed himself in ridiculous scandal. First came last week’s “friend of the underworld” remark. Today the Post is reporting that Barry has once again been caught using cocaine.
The last time this happened Barry was removed from office and made perhaps his best quote ever: “the bitch set me up!”. Here’s hoping for a similar outcome this time around.

And yet, if you wrote this as fiction, people would say it is too unbelievable. Personally, I say, never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter. Look at Buddy Cianci, after all? Convicted of political corruption and re-elected as mayor years later.
