Galapagos: 2006

Clicking the image will take you to a slide show of pictures from the expedition.
Look at the pretty birdie. Awww.
Thought the age of exploration ended a hundred years ago? Thought those deep sea vents were the last big hurrah of terrestrial naturalist discovery? Well so did I, but think again.

In the remote mountains of Indonesia scientists have discovered a veritable “lost world”, untouched by man for eons. Included in the list of bizarre new plant and animal species are the likes of an egg-laying mammal, a tree kangaroo and a “legendary” missing species of bird that was first described in 1897, but never observed since – a sort of Bigfoot of the bird world.

Kind of makes you want to hop a boat and join an expedition yourself, doesn’t it?

Yeah, well...now that we've found it, they're all doomed.
