Political capital? What political capital?

The news world is abuzz with excitement this morning. According to an AP report that as of this writing is less than 5 minutes old, Harriet Miers has officially withdrawn from her SCOTUS nomination. Interestingly, for reasons predicted with almost frightening accuracy last week by WashPost columnist Charles Krauthammer (hey, maybe someone in the White House *is* reading newspapers after all).

The lesson for increasingly lame-duck President Bush in this mess where neither Republicans nor Democrats supported his nomination? No one trusts you. You’ve ruined whatever reputation you had and long ago used up your political capital. You reap what you sow, George.

So, now the question is, who does he nominate? Does he go the crony route and nominate Alberto? Or does he placate the evangelical wing and go with contentious Janice Rogers Brown?

He pretty much has to satisfy his base. Without them he's less than nothing. So I expect a blatantly conservative choice that the Democrats will have to filibuster. Two months later we’ll start all over again and he’ll find someone more like Roberts.

That sounds about right. Makes Janice Rogers Brown a good pick.
