Olympics? Who needs ‘em?
But it may turn out for the best. Thanks to the Olympic snub, baseball finally found the motivation it needed to turn a long-time dream into reality. This weekend, with the Turin Olympics a fading memory, play will begin in the inaugural World Baseball Classic, the official name for what is better known as the World Cup of Baseball. There are 16 teams in the tournament, with at least one from every populated continent on Earth. Many of the teams are stocked with Major League talent, a feat never accomplished in any Olympic games.
I’m pretty excited to see how it turns out. Even if the US doesn’t do well (we are one of the favorites), it will certainly be an interesting experiment and, like the Olympics, an opportunity for the nations of the world to have a little fun together. Here’s hoping it becomes a regular event.

Of course, the GMs and owners are not really happy about it, but they aren't in it for the sport, so screw them.
My money's on the Dominicans. Well, if I had placed a waer it would be, anyway. THAT is a scary lineup.
The rest of my rooting involes injuries and Yankee players, regardless of nationality. :)
The US seems to have a strong bullpen, which may end up being key with all these pitch count restrictions. In any event we're in the weaker bracket. I think the US has a pretty clear path to the semifinals, at least... Japan looks like the only serious roadblock all the way into the championship game.
Also, I'm personally very curious to see how well the Cubans do playing against pros instead of college kids.
That will be interesting. Looking at the players involved, I think it will shake out thusly:
Pool A: Pool B:
Japan USA
Korea Mexico
Pool C: Pool D:
Puerto Rico Dominican Republic
Cuba Venezuela
Pool 1:
USA and Japan
Pool 2:
DR and Cuba
Chmapionship:
DR vs. USA
Winner:
DR
Caught this interesting blurb in the news today:
Cuba is expected to field mainly young players amid reported fears by the communist island about defections.
Well that's no fun.
