"Holy grail" of the deep

A giant squid. Really.

This photo, courtesy the Japanese National Science Museum via Yahoo!, is the first ever taken of a live, fully grown giant squid in its natural habitat.

The stuff of legend since the days of the ancient Greeks, giant squids are "the holy grail of deep sea animals", says Jim Barry of California's Monterey Bay Aquarium. According to Barry, the giant squid is something "that we have never seen alive, and now someone has video".

Wicked.
