The next oil war: Venezuela?

One would think, given that Venezuela is right in our backyard, that the United States would have a firm hold on the country and it’s precious drugs oil. Venezuela is, after all, one of the largest oil producing countries in the world and home to what is probably the western hemisphere’s largest remaining reserve.

As it turns out, that is far from the case...

Geopoliticians have been quietly predicting an anti-American alliance would emerge in Latin America for some time now, in January Venezuela joined Iran in an international attempt to steer oil exports to China instead of the U.S., and just recently Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez publicly warned America that any invading force would be soundly defeated and made to “bite the dust”, ironically at a so-called peace festival.

So what we’ve got here is a country in our own backyard with massive oil supplies, ties to the Cuba, Iran and China and a government hostile, even antagonistic, to American interests.

How far away can war be?
